An engine mounting is a rubber block that most drivers never see, until it fails. Five signs that it has:
- Vibration at idle that you feel in the steering wheel or the seat — the rubber has hardened or separated from the metal.
- The engine moves on acceleration — a thump when you pull away or change gear means the mounting no longer holds the engine.
- Clunks over bumps — metal touching metal where rubber should be.
- Cracks, oil-soaked or collapsed rubber on inspection; a mounting that has sunk on one side tilts the engine and strains hoses and the exhaust.
- More noise in the cab than before.
Replace mountings in sets (front, rear, gearbox) — a new mounting beside a tired one fails early — and match them by OE number and position; left and right are often different.
